Prison officers suspected of smuggling contraband into prison
AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into two recordings that emerged from Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) at Belle Isle last month.
The recordings which were made using mobile devices feature Alister Gould, doing time for murder; Osbourne Brudy who was jailed for armed robbery and abduction; and Moneesh Davis who is serving time for burglary.
And Minister of National Security Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said last week that it is hard for him to believe that mobile devices exist inside the prison without the collusion of prison officers in bringing them in.
Gonsalves said he has not yet received the results of the report, but he personally called the Commissioner of Police (COP) Collin John and Superintendent of Prisons Brenton Cain and requested it.
“The prisoners were breaking the prison rules and it’s difficult for me as a normal sentient being, a normal person with senses that you could have prisoners inside of the prisons with cell phones and some prison officers, are not colluding. It is difficult for me to believe that.
“Of course, that is part of the investigation because if there are indeed prison officers, they are breaking the regulations so they’re breaking the law,” Gonsalves said.
He added that from a disciplinary standpoint, the Public Service Commission has to deal with the issue as the office of the Prime Minister does not discipline public servants.
