Kristian looking for five in a row for Junior Calypso

Today, 19 junior calypsonians and Soca bards will take part in the 2019 Junior Calypso and Soca competitions at the Victoria Park.

The Layou Government School’s heavyweight Kristian Christopher will defend his crown against seven other singers. Christopher, always a force to be reckoned with, won last year with the song “Oh What a Tangled Web”, written by his father Wallace Christopher.

This year he is expected to defend his title with “Footprint Large”, a song about the achievements of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves. If Kristian wins, this would be five in a row for the young artiste.

So, the stage is set, and coming up against Kristian are Zonika Wilkinson of the Kingstown Anglican School with “Let my Voice be Heard”, Gavisha Andrews also of the Kingstown Anglican School, but with a song called “Too Young”, Omarie Cupid of the Fair Hall Government School with “Save Mother Earth”, Kalique Lewis of the Calder Government School with “A-Team”, Chanica Archibald of the Greiggs Government School with “Education Revolution”, Matthew John of the Stubbs Government School with “Fastest Money” and Anella Hamilton of the New Prospect Primary School with “I Love My Country.”

The junior calypso secondary school category will see a new champion this year as last year’s winner Damian ‘Boney Man’ Noel is out.

Noel represented the St Martin’s Secondary School (SMSS) last year, performing a song called ‘Silence Never’ (written by Sebastian ‘Bassy’ Alexander) but he has moved on to the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC), making him ineligible to defend his crown.

So, the crown is being competed for by eight calypsonians including the Thomas Saunders Secondary School’s Kristiana Christopher who will do a song called “Wake Up”. Christopher has several junior calypso and Soca crowns and has this year been competing at the tent level. She was also a face in the Queen of Calypso competition this year.

Also competing are the Thomas Saunders Secondary School’s Tia Wyllie with a song called “Youth of the nation”, Angellica Corke of the Troumaca Secondary School with “Legacy”, Ronella Lavia (Queen of Calypso competitor) of the West St George Secondary School “I love Calypso”, Christopher Bacchus of the St Martin’s Secondary School with “It taking too long”, Bevorn Baptiste of the Sandy Bay Secondary School with “Where were you”, Grennon Nero of the Sandy Bay Secondary School with “Boots Licker” and DaleAnn Nero of the Sandy Bay Secondary School with “Stop Posting”.

The junior Soca monarch competition was won last year by Bishop’s College Kingstown (BCK) student Teshikaa “Short T” Andrews with a song called “Cut them off”.

She defends her crown this year against Tafari Samuel of the Kingstown Preparatory School. Samuel will do a song called “Wave It”. Chanica Archibald of the Greiggs Government School will do “No Ride”, Grennon Nero of the Sandy Bay Government School will do “Kick Dust”, DeAndre Simmons of the St Martin’s Secondary School will do “Soca War”, LaDonna Free of the West St George Secondary School will do “I am Ready”, Kristian Christopher of the Layou Government School will do “Hands up to Layou” and Kristiana Christopher of the Thomas Saunders Secondary School will do “Shell Down”.
