Secondary schools public speaking prelims Tuesday

The first preliminaries of the annual secondary schools public speaking competition will begin next Tuesday with competitors in Zone One.

Participants in this zone will represent the St Vincent Girls’ High School, the Bishop’s College Kingstown, the Dr J.P Eustace Memorial Secondary School, the St Clair Dacon Secondary School, the Union Island Secondary School, and the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown. They will speak on the topic: “Violent and unpunished crime now seems to be a part of our daily lives. Enforcing the death penalty has now become our only recourse.”

Zone two will be held on Wednesday, September 26 and will involve students from the Campden Park Secondary School, the St Vincent Grammar School, the Bequia SDA Secondary School, the Bequia Community High School, the Intermediate High School, and the West St George Secondary School. Students in this zone will address the topic “In modern Society, there can be no valid justification for vigilante justice. However, the laws around citizen’s arrest do not help in the reinforcement of law and order.”

Zone three will be held on Thursday, September 27 with the topic “The incidents of sexual abuse of minors in the country is a disturbing phenomenon; it is simply a symptom of moral decay.” Students speaking on this topic will represent the St Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua, the Mountain View SDA Academy, the Georgetown Secondary School, the Adelphi Secondary School, the North Union Secondary School,
the Sandy Bay Secondary School and the George Stephens Sr. Secondary School.

Zone four will be held on Friday, September 28 as the students address the topic “The reduction in backyard farming has exposed a sizeable part of our population to genetically engineered foods and pesticides. A buy local campaign is one sure way to ensure that our nation consumes more organic and natural food”. The students participating are from the St Martin’s Secondary School, the Central Leeward Secondary School, the Troumaca Secondary School, the Petit Bordel Secondary School, the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, and the Buccament Secondary School.

The winner of each preliminary will be automatically be entered into the finals scheduled for October 2018.
