Man who was shot in leg by cops, dies after refusing medical help

Police on Thursday, August 16 shot a man in Penniston who later died at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH).

Stilson Harold was shot in his leg after police went to his home to investigate a report of assault made by his son Stilson Harold Jr.

According to the police, Stilson Jr reported to officers at the Vermont Police Station that his father had stabbed him in his neck with a piece of steel and he was behaving violently.
Police then went to the Penniston home of the Harolds where they are said to have met the elder Harold with a cutlass. Back-up was called, and Harold was shot in the leg and rushed to the MCMH where he later died.

It is said that Harold was uncontrollable at the hospital and medical staff were unable to give him the assistance that he needed and therefore he bled out.

In an August 16 expletive laden Facebook Live video, Harold’s daughter Lee Sha Prescott said that she received a photo from her sister showing her father lying at the hospital dead.

She said that from what family members told her, her father was dead before he was taken to the hospital and a report that he refused medical treatment was not true.

“…He is not so crazy to refuse medical attention,” Prescott said in her rant while she also called on Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, who is also Minister of National Security, to give an explanation as to why her father was killed and her mother’s house destroyed.

“That is murder, you all killed my father…,” said Prescott who added that she was coming to St Vincent from the United States (US) to seek answers.

Harold’s death brings to two, the number of persons shot and killed by police here this year.

On Tuesday April 17, 26-year-old Brice Raffique Chewitt also known as “War Teacher” was shot and killed by police officers patrolling the Gibson Corner area.

Originally from Calliaqua/Glen in East St George, Chewitt was shot twice at around 3.45 p.m. by officers mainly associated with the narcotics division of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) after he brandished a firearm.

Police later recovered a .45 calibre firearm and eight (8) rounds of .45 ammunition, two portions of cocaine and a portion of cannabis from Chewitt’s body.
