DJs urged to play music from all artistes at rural carnival events
Local disc jockeys (DJs) who are given gigs at rural carnival events endorsed by the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) have been warned to play music from all artistes.
The word of warning comes from Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the CDC Ashford Wood who said last week that he is noticing a trend creeping in where DJs who are also artistes are going to events and playing only their music.
“This year we are producing great music…and I really like to thank all the radio stations for playing the music of all the artistes. We know some stations will have that slight bias, but I don’t think we can really say there is a particular station that is displaying too much of a bias.
“It seems though that the bias is coming from the DJs where rural carnivals are hiring deejays and some of them seem to think that it is their show. They turn up with their laptop and all they play is their music,” said Wood.
He added, “The rural carnivals are supported by the CDC and we are not going to standby and let Carnival go back into the 1980s where people use to buy a road march and buy this and buy a that. We have already started to have discussions with the rurals (organizers) and we would be encouraging them to hire DJs who will be playing all the music.”
Woods said if a DJ is hired and cannot adhere to the stipulation, that DJ will be asked to step aside, and a replacement DJ will be provided.
“It is not a threat, it is just something that we want to see corrected early. Play the music, there is very good music out there. Let us as Vincies hear them and appreciate them,” said the CDC CEO.
