Schoolboy Beer Heroes’ Day Fun Walk a resounding success

Sixty-five walkers took off from Lower Middle Street in Kingstown at 5 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, on the challenging Schoolboy Beer 7.25K Fun Walk.

The fun walk began at the Schoolboy Beer Headquarters (HQ) on Lower Middle Street, Kingstown, next to the old Anglican School and took participants through various villages, before ending back where they started in Middle Street.

The mostly uphill course, which was marked, had monitors at vatious points throughout the walk.

The fastest time was clocked by Malcolm Webb, at 46.5 minutes (6.4 km/minute). Jeffery Richards, placed second with a time of 52 minutes, followed closely by Tyrone Creese.

The fastest female walker was Luraine Davis, with Vernice Stowe, second and Patrice Browne, third. The youngest female walker was 10-year-old Alysha Culzac, demonstrating an early love for sports, competition and team spirit. Webb said that “Alysha’s performance was on par with the top 10 adult walkers in this year’s Fun Walk, exhibiting phenomenal athletic potential”.

Also walking with the group was Mavis George, the oldest walker, who has participated in previous Schoolboy Beer Heroes’ Day Fun Walks.

Fun Walk organizer Malcolm Webb, who is a race walker and speed-walking trainer, can be seen many mornings and evenings training local race walkers and working out with other walk enthusiasts, like himself.

At the end of the walk all participants were served a healthy breakfast and lots of Schoolboy Beer, in honour of its founder and St Vincent track star James W Webb. Schoolboy Beer Fun Walk organizers thanked Dawn Smith – Hillside Caterers, Alanzo Howard – Howard Marine, Bigger Bigs – Phoenix Kitchen and Coreas Distribution Limited for their sponsorship and support. The team also thanked all those who participated in their 9th annual Fun Walk, promoting: Team Spirit, Outdoor Activities, Healthy Diet, Regular Exercise and Environmental Awareness.
