National Treasures of SVG to activate website next Friday

The website of the National Treasures of St Vincent and the Grenadines will be activated next Friday.

Designed and built by Maxin Browne, the website will share aspects of our Vincentian history, heritage and culture. A preview of the site was given during the second Annual General Meeting of the organization, held on November 16 at Frenches House.

During the meeting, reports of work done in 2017 and to date in 2017 were given. Ongoing projects include Treasure Trove/Treasured Memories – stories and recollections from older Vincentians are being recorded; Kingstown Heritage Walks, which involves documentation of the history and heritage of several areas, buildings and sites of significance in Kingstown and in the future locals and tourists alike will be able to go on the walks; and the collection of Sayings, Proverbs and Idioms. The town of Barrouallie was highlighted for its heritage, especially as regards the Barrouallie Whalers and a new project will unfold, which will spotlight the Whaling Shanties and Whaling History.

National Treasures of St Vincent and the Grenadines Incorporated is a non-profit organization, which was established in 2014. The organization recognizes that as things change, there were few records of many aspects of our cultural heritage. They are particularly concerned that the knowledge and oral histories are being lost with the death of older Vincentians, and that the younger generations have not been exposed to many aspects of our cultural heritage, which would, unless some initiatives are taken, eventually disappear.

Their mission has been identified as a commitment to the procurement, preservation, protection, promotion and dissemination of that which encompasses the intangible history, heritage and culture of St Vincent and the Grenadines and its people.

The website is thus a major part of the dissemination of our intangible treasures.
