GHS New York Alumni group gives support to five girls

Kenique Samuel is singing praises to the New York chapter of the Girls’ High School (GHS) Alumni Association for allowing her to obtain a full five-year scholarship to attend the GHS.

The scholarship takes care of her uniform, books, lunch and transportation. Kenique lives at Belmont.

The lucky scholarship recipient was chosen from among a group of girls who applied for the scholarship by writing essays to the Alumni Association, explaining why they wanted to attend the GHS and how the Association could help.

“I feel happy, I feel proud”, said the 11-year-old, who placed 110th for girls in the last Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA), as a student of the CW Prescod Primary School.

“I always wanted to go to the GHS and in my essay, I said that the scholarship will help out my mother because she is the only one and she does everything in the home and my daddy is not providing for me and my little sister,” Kenique explained, adding, “I thank you, you have really helped out my family.”

Kenique and her mother, Rennie Samuel, were on hand to receive the scholarship on Wednesday, during a ceremony at the office of lawyer Maferne Mayers-Oliver in Kingstown. Mayers-Oliver and Gillian Griffith are the local liaisons for the New York-based group.

“I feel happy, because it is helping me out a lot, because I am the breadwinner of the house and doing everything,” said Kenique’s mother.

Griffith revealed that Kenique must maintain a certain average to keep the scholarship for her five-year GHS journey. She also noted that apart from the full scholarships, the association also gave four stipends.

The recipients of the stipends are Roshauna Cupid of Lowmans Windward, Zenice Primus of Marriaqua, Tori Bardoo of Arnos Vale and Areah Wilson of Mayreau.

The New York chapter of the GHS Alumni Association has been providing assistance to students for over 20 years.(LC)
