Blocked Rose Place/Bottom Town canal a serious health hazard

A number of residents in the Rose Place/Bottom Town area are calling on the relevant authorities to look into cleaning a large canal that runs through the area and is a health hazard.

Up to press time on Wednesday, the canal was blocked and was not able to empty into the sea, as the mouth is choked by beach sand.

The blockage has caused the drain to remain filled with stagnant water and what is creating even a bigger problem is that some people are using the canal as a dumping ground for human waste, Styrofoam products and household garbage.

One concerned resident told SEARCHLIGHT that on a number of occasions, small children have fallen into the muck and one incident saw a child having to be taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) for medical treatment.

When contacted, an employee at the Buildings, Roads and General Services Authority (BRAGSA) said that they are aware of the problem and it will soon be rectified.
