NTRC announces winners in I2 Competition

Teams from the Mountain View Adventist Academy made a sweep of the secondary division of the NTRC’s iSquared competition last week, while Hairouna Dragons and Proactive Solutions Innovators shared the tertiary division titles.

The Richland Park based secondary school teams, named Northern Lights and Northern Lights Two, won the application and ideas categories respectively, as this year’s installment of the competition took place on Thursday, January 19, at the National Insurance Services conference room in Kingstown.

The two member group of Northern Lights Two came up with the Portable Traffic Management System, an idea that they believe is the solution to highly effective traffic management, and getting around the problems faced by drivers when there are obstacles and obstructions on the roads, and would generate a smoother flow of traffic.

The secondary category judges, who consisted of Alex Barnwell, Krislin Goulbourne, Cenus Hinds, Michael John and Anthony McKenzie, gave the team’s idea the nod over the team from the St Vincent Girls’ High School, who placed second with their idea, and the Petit Bordel Secondary School, which placed third.

For their win, Northern Lights Two walked away with $2,000 cash, smart phones from Flow and certificates, while second place received $1,500, and third got $1,000.

In the applications category, the winning Northern Lights team received $3,500, as well as smart phones from Digicel, while second placed Thomas Saunders Secondary School received $2,500 and third placed Troumaca Secondary School earned $1,500.

The Mountain View Adventist Academy’s team took the top spot by developing an app that will help motorists find available parking spaces in the parking lots in Kingstown that are on the application.

The team convinced the judges that the app would enhance traffic and parking efficiency effectively, if used as it should be.

Hairouna Dragons, a team from the teaching division of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, won the first place in the tertiary category, by coming up with an idea called “Your Network”, an employment application that brings potential employees and bosses together on the same platform.

The judges, Roger Clifton, Anthony McKenzie, Sunel John, Sean Samuel and David Browne, rewarded the team for their innovative idea, and the two member team received $2,000, $100 gift vouchers from Massy Stores, $200 vouchers from Courts St Vincent Limited, $500 cash from flash drives.

The second placed team of Control Alt Delete placed second and received $1,500, while Group CPP placed third and received $1,000.

Proactive Solutions Innovators from the Division of Arts, Science and General Studies took the top spot, along with $3,500 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 4s compliments King’s Computer Corporation in the tertiary app category.

The team developed an app named ALERT, which allows users to see the various locally produced products and talent that would not have otherwise gotten local, regional and international exposure.

The team won over Group CPP, who received $2,500 for their second place, and New Investors, who placed third and received $1,500.

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College also received $1,000 for providing the most entries, while the mentors for each winning team received cash prizes ranging from $500 to $700.
