Former nurse marks 100th birthday

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Nurses Association is extending birthday greetings to Doreen Richards, who celebrates her 100th birthday today.

Richards was born on November 22, 1916 and trained as a nurse at the School of Nursing in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). She worked in St Vincent before migrating to the USA.{{more}}

The Nurses Association said Richards was a trailblazer and before leaving SVG, she was one of the founding members of the Caribbean Nursing Organization (CNO). The purpose of the CNO is to work towards improving the health of all people in the Caribbean, by promoting improvement in the standards of nursing care, and advancing the education, economic and professional welfare of the nurses.

In the USA, Richards worked at St Mary’s Hospital, Brooklyn. Her co-workers stated that she was a very dedicated nurse, caring and loving person.

According to her family, she would do anything for her children and grandchildren and was very supportive to her extended family. Doreen has a good sense of humour and would have you roaring with laughter.

As Florence Nightingale said, “I think one’s feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions which bring results.”
