Nigerian tenants pleading with landlords to be patient

Nigerian medical students are pleading with their landlords to be patient with them if they are late in paying their rent.

President of the Nigerian Association of St Vincent and the Grenadines Foluso Ayanleke, during an interview with SEARCHLIGHT on Wednesday, explained that there is currently an economic recession in Nigeria, which has led to there being a shortage of dollars.{{more}}

Ayanleke explained that because there is no direct connection between the banking systems in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) and Nigeria, the money takes a while to arrive.

According to the student, money sometimes takes up to six weeks to get to SVG from Nigeria. He also said that even if the money is sent via Western Union or Money Gram, it still takes some time before it arrives.

Ayanleke is therefore reaching out to the government to see what help can be offered.

“We want … a way we can partner with the government and see if they can be of help and there would be a kind of smooth and comfortable banking connection, so that money can be sent from Nigeria so that they can pay their rent,” he said.

The association’s president said the students view SVG as their home away from home and are pleading with the landlords to understand their economic situation for the moment.

“We are appealing to their conscience that they should just try and understand our economic situation for now,” Ayanleke said.(CM)
