Flow awards five students with scholarships, one with grant

Six students who performed exceptionally well during this year’s Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) were provided with scholarships from FLOW to assist with their secondary and tertiary

education.

FLOW’s country manager Wayne Hull, during the handing over ceremony on Wednesday at the Professional Secretariat conference room, said that this activity is among his favourite to host as country manager.{{more}}

“It’s really a proud moment for the company, where we can…recognize success and contribute and give back to the community in which we do business.”

Hull stated that his company has contributed to development and education of children for over 34 years.

Five new scholarship recipients, who join 39 others, were awarded with seven-year scholarships, while one was awarded a one-off seven-year grant.

Hull noted that over the life of each scholarship, the value roughly amounts to EC$10,000 for each person and about $50,000 is spent annually on the programme.

“We, as a company, are very proud to give back and do that for our young students who have demonstrated a high level of success and a high level of achievement in their young academic lives,” the country manager stated.

He also indicated that a further four scholarships will be awarded this year to the top three finalists in the Lions Club public speaking competition and the top student after remediation in the 2016 CSEC exams.

Also speaking at the ceremony was representative from the Ministry of Education Kay Martin-Jack who encouraged the students to put their scholarships to good use.

“It means then you got to ensure that you work very hard to maintain this scholarship.”

She also congratulated the students and wished them the best of luck on their educational journey.

Martin-Jack also told parents to continue to support the children, since their educational journey is just only beginning.

“You have a responsibility, you have a pivotal role to play in ensuring that your children realize their dreams,” she stated.

She further encouraged the parents to ensure assignments are completed, that they check in with teachers and that they always make sure their children exhibit a high level of discipline.

Current scholarship recipient Janique Nichols noted that because of FLOW’s generosity she never has to worry about inadequate school supplies. She also said that the high standard set for scholarship recipients has opened up ‘a new door of motivation’ for her.

“I have been even more motivated to work and study harder, in my effort not forfeit such a great opportunity.”

Nichols thanked the company for their support throughout the years. (CM)
