The first phase of the project got started last Sunday, as fallen trees which were once part of land space bordering the beach, were dug up and removed.

Making this first phase possible were Osmond “Fatty” Davy and Elvis De Riggs, who bore the cost of the use of the excavator.

The two, who are Sion Hill-born, have also pledged to fund the seating to enhance the comfort of users.

Driving the project is Leroy Llewellyn, who was on hand to oversee last Sunday’s first phase.

Llewellyn told SEARCHLIGHT that the improvements at Sion Hill Bay had been talked about for many years and although some attempts were made in the past, he is optimistic that this one will be sustained.

He disclosed that shade trees and other ornamental plants will be placed in strategic locations to help enhance the surroundings.

Llewellyn noted that the removal of sand, which has contributed significantly to the erosion and subsequent encroachment of the land space, will be policed.

As a consequence, even members of the Sion Hill community tended to go elsewhere for a sea bath; however, an optimistic Llewellyn believes when the restoration project is advanced, this trend will be reversed.

The Sion Hill Bay is also used by several organizations to host beach splashes.(RT)
