During a press conference last Tuesday at the Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas, President Nicolas Maduro said that there are factions within the US calling for military intervention in the economic and social crisis that is currently plaguing the South American country.
Referring to the US government and its sympathizers as âimperialistsâ, Maduro said that there is a world conspiracy â led by said imperialists â to conquer countries across the globe that produce petrol.
âWho are the ones responsible for the attacks in Iraq? The same ones attacking Venezuela now,â he insisted.
âWho destroyed Libya?â
The Venezuela president said that the imperialist powers have a âfatal obsessionâ with him, with the US government having created economic and financial situations against his administration that have been fuelling a negative impact in Venezuela over the past five to six months.
He further asserted that even though foreign aggression has been directed toward Venezuela for over a decade, it is currently at the worst that it has ever been.
In particular, Maduro said that these imperialist powers that are working against Venezuela possess a superiority complex in regard to Latin America and the Caribbean, and are working against them to create division.
âWhen you canât rule, divide.â
The Venezuela president also chastised foreign media in the US and Spain, in particular, for the negative light in which they continue to portray Maduro and his administration.
He questioned why this âinternational media campaignâ against Venezuela exists, especially with the knowledge that in their respective countries, serious social, political and economic problems also exist.
Additionally, he highlighted the refugee crisis that is currently afflicting many European countries, where immigrants from North Africa, the Middle East and Afghanistan are fleeing their own countries.
Maduro further claimed that the Venezuelan Opposition is conspiring with these negative outside forces, who donât have the nationâs best interests at heart.
Explaining that his two main tasks currently are to maintain peace within Venezuela and to help maintain world peace, Maduro beseeched his citizens to come together to work towards building and strengthening the economy â regardless of whether they support his administration or not.
On May 13, the Venezuelan president declared a state of emergency, following which he obtained powers that, according to Maduro, allow him to stabilize the country, and âconfront all the international and national threats against our fatherland in this moment.â
However, so far, he has not detailed how exactly he intends to achieve such.
The country is contending with soaring inflation and crime rates, a shrinking economy, severe food shortages, and power cuts so frequent that public servants have been put on a two-day work week.
President Maduroâs press conference was televised via satellite link through Venezuelan embassies located across the globe â including St Vincent and the Grenadines. (JSV)
