GTC extending plants, pets and poultry project
An undertaking by the Grassroot Tennis Club (GTC) will result in 25 pre-schools across St Vincent being part of a plants, pets and poultry project.
The initiative was propped up last Tuesday with the Rainbow Pre-school being the recipient of two rabbits, two fowls, as well as pepper, cucumber, tomato and cabbage slips.{{more}}
Similar donations will be made to other pre-schools, with some of the items produced on the compound of the GTC at Murrayâs Road.
Head of the GTC Grant Connell indicated that it is important that youngsters see that they can watch the items grow, as well grow what they eat and eat what they grow.
âIt starts with these little ones, creating a new mentality among Vincentians in 10 years, for a more sustainable future,â Connell proffered.
âThey will see the time it takes for the fowls to grow and eventually see the process of the egg being laid and the process and the time it takes for the chicks to be born….They will have a sense of responsibility when they come to school and make sure the animals are alive and be encouraged to bring food for them from home, be it the old cabbage, carrot or dried coconuts…..They will also see how the manure can be used to boost the plants, so get a better understanding of the cycle of life and create a new mindset,â Connell stated.
He said the project is timely and reflected on the happenings in places like Venezuela. âWe have to get them to understand that we as a nation can be self-sustainable and feed ourselves and be proud of our blue food diet, instead of most of the fast food junk that is dumped on us.
âThe bigger picture of seeing that eggs, meat and vegetables can all be done in your backyard, and we are not rich in oil, but we have what it takes to sustain ourselves and erase the mindset of foreign is better,â Connell concluded.(RT)
