Producer ‘Wetty Beatz’ stepping into limelight for Vincy Mas 2k16

International Soca artistes Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin, Fay Ann Lyons and Olatunji, along with St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Skinny Fabulous, Madskull and Royall, are just a few of the many artistes with whom renowned producer Phillip ‘Wetty Beatz’ Bastian has worked.

Bastian, a native of Union Island, who currently resides in Paris and London, this year released his first single, ‘Under Dey’, which has been receiving rave reviews and regular air play.{{more}}

And, later in the season, Vincentians can look out for the release of his power soca. According to Bastian, while he has never been a competitive person, he told SEARCHLIGHT “if push comes to shove and people want to hear…, I will do it.”

The producer, during a sit down at SEARCHLIGHT on Monday, reflected on his humble beginnings, stating that his first studio was nicknamed ‘blow out,’ because “everything you plugged in used to blow out”.

“I used to produce in my house, with a piece of mic that just run straight to the computer, and use key base at the time and fruit loop,” he said laughing.

While he is now known for his popular soca hit, the new soca artiste pointed out that when he began he produced hip-hop tracks with his friends.

Bastian pointed out that it was in 2012, after producing for former Grenada Soca Monarch winner Lavaman, he got his first big push.

“I continued doing it…until I almost finished school. I had a riddim before… it wasn’t a big, big break, but it was a good forward which was the simidimi riddim,” the 25-year-old producer said.

Bastian told SEARCHLIGHT that although he already produced soca monarch-winning tracks, he was extremely proud when former classmate and friend Lancelot ‘Madskull’ Gloster placed in the 2014 Soca Monarch competition with a track he produced.

“For his first time going in for Soca Monarch…and then placing, it was a big thing…like…this could go far and in the second year he came 3rd, so he keeps moving up the ladder and hopefully, this year, I will come first and he would come second.”

Bastian, who now has his own recording label, indicated that he is currently looking for persons to sign to his label.

“I am looking for somebody that is serious and committed to music and just want to reach somewhere.”

He stated that in this current industry he would like to work with up-and-coming soca artiste Milo.
