I try to bring something different every year – Madskull

Lancelot “Madskull” Gloster believes that since his hit release ‘Family,’ there has been a slight change in the music here in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Gloster told SEARCHLIGHT this during an interview on Monday and also stated that he tries every year to speak on an issue which many artistes tend not to really do.{{more}}

“Songs that we did are topics that people never really hit before…we always try to find…ideas for songs that people can relate to.”

The former Union Island resident, who has been doing soca music for nine years, stated that he believes he got it easier than most new artistes.

“To me, I think I get it easier than some other artistes…, at the time my brother was a DJ at Hot 97, so my brother used to…take his computer and play it for himself. I was determined, the first time I performed in a big crowd was for New Song competition…and after that time I continued doing it,” the young artiste said.

Gloster stated that this year he is looking to top the past two years with the help of his producer Phillip ‘Wetty Beatz’ Bastian, and hopes he will create a new wave in the industry.

“The thing is, we are going to top it because every year Wetty Beatz and myself, he know exactly what I am looking for…it is the build-up of last year’s tracks that really dominated last year – we try to create a different wave.”

While he hopes to take the crown at this year’s Soca Monarch competition, Gloster stated that he would not mind if he places second.

He encouraged new artistes to think outside of the box and try new things with their music.

“It’s basically telling the younger youths they must think outside the box. We don’t want people to say we always coming with one set of songs, so we just keep doing different,” he added.

Additionally, he said he believes that great beats and proper mixing and mastering is what makes a song great.

“Sometimes you have a great song, but the beat to that song is garbage. Sometimes you have a wicked beat and the song that you sing is garbage. You have to get proper mixing and mastering.” (CM)
