PM Gonsalves debunks claims of Sir Louis US citizenship

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has dismissed the rumours of Deputy Prime Minister Sir Louis Straker still holding United States (US) citizenship.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday at Cabinet Room Gonsalves stated that such a claim had no truth to it.{{more}}

A letter which made it rounds to local media houses in the week raised the question of whether or not Straker had denounced in US citizenship before running in the December 9 General election.

Additionally it noted that had this not been done it would prove Straker’s ineligibility to hold such an office.

“That is not true. The very fact that you asked the question shows you how the idiocy of a lot of people can become main stream,” Gonsalves stated definitively.

He even likened the letter to Donald Trump’s accusation against President Obama of not being American born.

“You know…they don’t intend for that to be taken seriously, all that is intended to do is to see if they can shake confidence in people in Central Leeward,” the prime minister added.

Gonsalves also stated that since the December 9 General Election the issue of governance has never once been raised by the New Democratic Party (NDP).

“Look…since the election its now four months, the opposition has not raised on serious issue about governance, what they have raised about is power…,” he said.

Gonsalves even spoke on the issue which was raised by opposition leader Arnhim Eustace last week about monies owed by Canouan developers saying: “When they raise an issue about governance like for instance, sale of land in Canouan the 40 acres, they forget that it happened in the house. They were all there; I write a whole article, it was published in the house what manner of people are these.”

“It is completely astounding when I heard them laughing and mocking zero hunger, I just can’t understand. Those are your interventions on public policy, they are just crazy,” he added.

The Prime Minister stated that he knows that the ‘longer Eustace prolongs his pain inside the NDP, the more they are going to lose support’.

“At the end of the day with all of these antics they have to face the people, people watching them and saying, this is a lot foolishness,” he stated.
