Roadwork on South Leeward Highway enters final stage

The South Leeward Highway Rehabilitation and Improvement Project is into its final stage and Minister of Transport and Works Julian Francis is asking motorists to bear with contractors a little while longer as the work winds up.

Francis said that the project faced a number of challenges and setbacks, but it is now in the final phase and persons can already see the quality of the roadwork.{{more}}

He said that it is difficult to repair a road while it is in use and while the construction causes an inconvenience to road users, the contractors have been trying their best to alleviate some of the problems, even working at nights.

Francis noted that the availability of aggregate created some problems, but that has been somewhat solved with the importation of material from Dominica, while a number of unforeseen issues like vehicles breaking down on the road sometimes created problems in respect of the free flow of traffic.

He noted also that the Central Water and Sewerage Authority (CWSA) is installing sewer lines under the highway, “so I’m asking people to be patient…we are making good progress.”

The project, which was expected to be finished next month (May 2016), is being funded by EC$40 million from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

After the work is done, the road would have been repaired from Hospital Corner to Layou, while a number of areas have already been widened and proper drainage put in place.
