Help make 1,000 Magic Moments for needy children!

The members of charitable organization 1,000 Magic Moments are seeking donations of toys and gifts so that they can reach their goal of providing gifts to 1,000 needy children this Christmas.

Coordinator of the project Dorretta Casino said she has recuited the help of 30 diverse members of the community who are working together to make this project a success.{{more}}

She assured that 100 per cent of all donations received will go toward the purchase of gifts.

“To date we have a total of 400 gifts through donations made from families in Mexico City who have heard about my cause and were interested in supporting it and monetary donations and purchases made from my personal investment and that of friends and strangers alike. We are in need of another 600 to meet our current goal of 1,000,” Casino said.

The group will distribute the presents in Fancy, Sandy Bay, Georgetown, Langley Park, Calliaqua, Pole Yard, Rose Place, Walvaroo, Greiggs, Richland Park, Pauls Avenue, Ottley Hall, Layou, Barrouallie and Chateaubelair, which according to the 2007/2008 Poverty Assessment study, are among communities with the highest incidences of poverty.

Donations will be accepted until December 20 and the gifts will be distributed to the children on December 24 and 25.

“Several years ago, I embarked on a project like this on a much smaller scale. I travelled to the leeward side of the island on Christmas Day and handed out a few gifts to kids along the way. One boy planted a seed; he was so overjoyed, he cried when the gift was handed to him. He let me know it was the first gift he had ever received. He was about 10 years old, and lives with his grandmother. He shared with me that every Christmas morning he watched his friends open and

play with their new gifts, silently wishing he would have one of his very own. For me, this was a magical moment for us both,” Casino said.

Gently used toys, new toys, stuffed animals, Legos sets/Lego architecture sets, building sets, transforming action figures/cars, sports and outdoor items – balls, bats, jump ropes, brain teasers or challenging games/puzzles, stationery sets; arts and crafts: paper airplanes, model cars, picture frames; books and puzzles are needed for children between the ages of 0 and 12 years old.

Members of the public are asked to join the project by nominating families in need. This may be done through the group’s Facebook page:
