Supervisor of Elections accosted by lawyers

Supervisor of Elections Sylvia Findlay had to be placed under police protection on Wednesday, after reports that she was accosted by lawyers attached to the New Democratic Party (NDP).

Speaking about the incident on Wednesday, night, leader of the Unity Labour Party (ULP) Dr Ralph Gonsalves said that he was distressed to learn on Election Day that three lawyers,{{more}} one from St Vincent and the Grenadines and two from Trinidad and Tobago went to the office of the Supervisor of Elections and confronted her on a matter in a very aggressive way.

“…She felt intimidated and as a consequence of that, when that information came to me, not from the supervisor of elections, but from another source, I immediately requested that the Commissioner of Police provide personal security.”

Gonsalves said that time and time again, he has stressed that he would not tolerate what he deemed as high-handedness by anyone. He said that the local is part of the hierarchy of the NDP.

“We have had a free and fair elections, hard fought. We have been having elections for 64 years and these 64 years has thought us to be mature about these matters and I am wanting the opposition to be mature,” said Gonsalves who added, “let us celebrate this victory with maturity and peace”.

Reports are that Trinidadian lawyer Keith Scotland and local lawyer and NDP public relations officer (PRO) are among lawyers who visited the electoral office on Wednesday.
