PM lauds Fire Department

Prime minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has lauded the efforts of firefighters of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.

“I want to thank the firefighters. I was there on Sunday night… I saw the firefighters at work and I really want to congratulate them. They were very good in stopping the blaze affecting the Registry.{{more}}

“The buildings which were destroyed didn’t have any current functional use because of the conditions in which they were,” Gonsalves said in Parliament on Tuesday morning.

On August 23, at about 5:20 p.m., the Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at the building that was once occupied by the Treasury Department, in capital Kingstown.

Last Sunday’s fire gutted the old Treasury building, the former office of the Ministry of National Mobilization and the former electoral office.

With the aid of two fire tenders, one deployed from the ET Joshua Airport, firefighters fought the raging inferno well into the night, ensuring that the neighbouring building that houses the Registry Department was not affected by the fire.

That building only suffered water damage and loss of electricity.

Gonsalves also noted that plans are already afoot to redevelop the block that houses all of the buildings that were destroyed in Sunday’s inferno.(KW)
