‘Put a fish on your dish’ for Fisherman’s Day

“Forty years of harvest, expect no less, fish is the best” is the theme for the 40th anniversary of the Fisherman’s Day celebrations.

The slogan selected is: “Put a fish on your dish.”

This year’s celebrations serve as a significant achievement, particularly for those involved in the fishing industry, fishers and their {{more}} families, auxiliary workers and other stakeholders.In addition, it is an opportune time for all to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of our fisher folk to this country’s economy and culture and to the health of our citizens.

This year, 40 days of activities have been planned in commemoration of the 40th anniversary celebrations. Fisherman’s Day activities will commence on April 16, 2015 and culminate on Whit Monday, May 25, 2015.

Throughout the 40 days celebration, a number of activities will be held including: a primary schools poster competition; a marine science exhibition among secondary schools; the Tots in Marine Life; radio quizzes and the highly anticipated Fish Nights.

The dates for the mentioned activities, along with other planned activities, will be announced at a later date.

A Fisherman’s Day committee meeting was held on Thursday, March 5, 2015 and an eight-member executive was selected to serve on this year’s committee.

Winsbert Harry has been selected as chair for the third consecutive year.

Other members of the executive committee are: vice-chair Leonard Charles; secretary Alisa Martin; assistant secretary Linda Grant; treasurer Reshevski Jack; assistant treasurer Jennifer Cruickshank-Howard; PRO Junior Sutherland; assistant PRO Audwin Andrews.

Fisherman’s Day will be held at the Calliaqua Fisheries Centre.
