River defence project in pipeline for Buccament
A river defence project for the Buccament River, which will help to protect villagers from future flooding, is in the pipeline.
Over the years, villagers in the area have experienced flooding whenever the river overflows its banks.{{more}}
Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves told journalists on Tuesday that a project was underway, particularly because of the weather conditions that have affected this country over the past years.
âThere is in fact a project and there is currently a project being designed for it. You see, in a number of these projects, it is important for us to get the work done properly to do the designs, so that when we do it, we do it in a way thatâs going to last,â Gonsalves said.
The Prime Minister revealed that originally, when the Buccament Bay Resort project came on stream, the developers had indicated that they would do river defences for both sides of the river. However, the developers only built a defence on their side of the river.
âThere has always been flooding on that side, on the village side. But clearly, it becomes more evident when the other side is protected,â Gonsalves said.
âIt wasnât a condition of the development. They just didnât do it and we have to do it. It has become even more urgent now because of the kinds of weather events weâve been having. We canât leave these things for chance.â (BK)
