Sion Hill Government School students wrap up KCCU quiz

The pair of Vashon Thomas and Selena Davis of the Sion Hill Government School answered their way to the top of the Kingstown Co-operative Credit Union’s (KCCU) Primary Schools’ Quiz finals, last Saturday at the Kingstown Methodist Church Hall.

Thomas and Davis{{more}} tallied 25 points, to ensure that their school was the first to inscribe its name on the Thomas Saunders Challenge Trophy.

The winners received individual trophies, plus $300 each, with the school the recipient of $2,000, which would go towards a project of the school’s choice.

Thomas and Davis, both 10 years old, although showing little emotion, expressed to SEARCHLIGHT their joy in copping the quiz.

Sion Hill, however, had to stave off the late challenge of first cousins Tamika Miguel and Makedda Miguel of the Clare Valley Government School. The Miguels scored 22 points, earning 12 points in the final round – the buzzer phase of the competition.

They received individual trophies, along with a cash prize of $200 each.

Placing third was the Kingstown Government School, which was represented by the pair of Ashyah McKie and Jandiel Charles, earning themselves individual trophies and $150 each.

The other finalists were Shemyiah Robertson and Kemarlie Durrant of the Evesham Methodist; Jamesha George and Gaius Stephenson – Buccament Government and Khalid Browne and Eunice Cepeda – the Biabou Government.

The finalists emerged from the preliminary round held at the St Vincent Grammar School on November 1.

They were quizzed in the areas of local history, current affairs, general knowledge, sports and credit union affairs, which involved multiple choice questions, close ended questions and the buzzer round.(RT)
