The lecture, by focusing on St. Vincent, provided an historical background that could inform the public debate on Reparations. It raised questions about the connections between the struggles of the Caribs and the growth of the Sugar Industry and Slavery.

The second lecture, “The Coloniality of Everyday Violence” will be done by Dr. Halimah DeShong, Lecturer at the Institute for Gender and Development Studies, the Nita Barrow Unit, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

Dr. DeShong’s lecture will explore the ways in which the brutality and violence of the colonial period, and contemporary manifestations of violence are inextricably linked. Emphasis will be placed on various forms of everyday violence – physical and symbolic, interpersonal and collective – in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with examples drawn from the wider Caribbean.”__This lecture will be held on Thursday August 14 at 7 p.m. at the UWI Open Campus Lecture Hall. The Open Campus extends an invitation to the public.
