Elwardo Lynch given a disorderly send off

Leader of the Opposition Arnhim Eustace says he did not try to put an end to the commotion that took place Saturday, during the funeral service of New Democratic Party’s (NDP) spokesman Elwardo Lynch, because he did not believe that he would have been able to quell the boisterous crowd.{{more}}

In a brief chat with SEARCHLIGHT moments after Lynch was interred at the Georgetown cemetery, Eustace said he believed that if he had tried to quiet members of the congregation who were booing and jeering Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, the NDP supporters would not have listened to him, because they were “determined” to disrupt the Prime Minister.

Eustace said that since the death of E G, as he was affectionately called, a number of persons, including Gonsalves, had been “playing politics” and he didn’t “want any part of that.”

When asked if he thought the supporters were right to behave in the manner they did at the ceremony, Eustace said that they were “exercising their democratic rights.”

The Opposition Leader reiterated his admiration for Lynch, and lauded the staff at the Garden of Eden Nursing Home for the care and attention given to Lynch while he was there.

Eustace, along with former Prime Minister and president of the NDP Sir James Mitchell and Gonsalves spoke at the ceremony.(JJ)
