Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said that negotiations for the construction of the infrastructure was among the matters discussed during his week long trip to the South American country last week.

While in Ecuador, Gonsalves also met with a number of government officials, including President Rafael Correa.

The Prime Minister indicated that three of the single-lane structures will be built in the North Leeward constituency at Cacarta in Fitz-Hughes, Sharpes in Chateaubelair, and Plan in Chateaubelair, while a double-lane bridge will be constructed in South Leeward at Hope, in Vermont.

The river crossings at these sites were destroyed during last year’s Christmas storm. The Prime Minister pointed out that apart from the bridges, discussions were held with regard to educational exchanges.

He said that the possibility of Vincentians teaching Ecuadorian teachers the English language was explored, as well as the prospect of Vincentian students attending universities in that country.

The Prime Minister and his delegation, which included Foreign Affairs Minister Camillo Gonsalves; the Prime Minister’s wife Eloise; ambassador to Ecuador and other Latin American countries Andreas Wickham; civil engineer Cecil Harris; head of the Latin American desk in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Gareth Bynoe; the Prime Minister’s personal secretary Angie Jackson and member of the Prime Minister’s security detail Station Sergeant Francois, also met with the president of the national assembly, the Mayor of Quito, and toured the Galapagos Islands.

Gonsalves was bestowed with Ecuador’s highest civilian honour, the Order of Merit.(JJ)
