Sunglasses donated to traffic police officers
The eyes of some members of the Traffic Department of the police force are now better protected from the sun, thanks to a donation of sunglasses from The Spectacle Shoppe.
Nine pairs of sunglasses, of various brands, were handed over to the officers {{more}}at the department on Thursday, June 5.
Steven Sutherland, managing director of The Spectacle Shoppe, said the donation is their way of reaching out to the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.
“We are mindful of the fact that the traffic guys are exposed to the sun a lot and we know of issues that can be caused from this constant exposure. We just saw the need of preventing that from happening and one way that can be done is by the use of sunglasses, which help to block out the sun’s UV (Ultraviolet) rays,” Sutherland said.
The donation is the brainchild of Dr Noriko Wayan, optometrist at The Spectacle Shoppe, who said when driving, she normally sees traffic police officers in the blazing sun executing their duties.
“I was just thinking it would better if we help them, since they help us also. I just thought we could give them sunglasses to protect their eyes as they are basically exposed,” she stated.
Head of the Traffic Department Superintendent Kenneth John thanked Sutherland for the donation and stated that it will go a long way in assisting the officers.
Commissioner of Police Michael Charles and head of the Police Public Relations Department ASP Jonathan Nicholls also expressed gratitude for the donation.(KW)
