CARILEC at critical point in its history – Myers
Utility managers from across the Caribbean held discussions on the way forward for the region at the CARILEC CEOâs Conference and Corporate Communications Symposium that was held in St Thomas recently.
CARILEC is an association of electric utilities, suppliers, manufacturers {{more}}and other stakeholders operating in the electricity industry in the Caribbean. CARILEC comprises 88 members – 32 Full Members that are electric utilities and 52 Associate Members that are companies involved in some aspect of servicing the electric utility business and four Affiliate Members.
This yearâs conference was a historic event as CARILEC is celebrating its 25th anniversary. In an address at the opening ceremony, chief executive officer of VINLEC and chair of CARILEC, Thornley Myers noted that this is a critical time in the organizationâs history, as the electric utility sector in the region is undergoing a period of change. Myers encouraged the participants to embrace this era and find creative ways to move the sector ahead. He congratulated CARILEC on this milestone and noted that the predecessors should be honoured for their contribution.
According to Myers, CARILECâs vision has proven to be viable and sustainable throughout the years. He said that the organization continues to provide timely and sound advice to the member organizations.
Over 100 persons attended the conference, which ran from May 18 to 22. Among the areas addressed were Good Corporate Governance; Embracing the Caribbean Energy Revolution; Outage and Disaster Management Planning; Effective Negotiations; and Communications Revolution.
CEO Thornley Myers and Communications officer Tamara Job-Sprott represented VINLEC at the conference. It was held under the theme âPowering and Empowering the Caribbean.â
