Alvin Spencer, 58, security officer of the Postal Corporation, will return to court on June 16.
He was charged yesterday, at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court, with assaulting Police Constable Elron Lewis, 27, and punching him on the left side of his face, causing actual bodily harm. He was also charged with resisting arrest. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to information reaching SEARCHLIGHT, the police officer, while on duty in the area of the Postal Corporation, was in conversation with a female, close to the door of the post office at about 7:05 a.m. on May 23.
It is alleged that while the police officer was standing close to the door, Spencer slammed the door in his face. SEARCHLIGHT understands that when the police officer told Spencer he was going to arrest him, the security guard punched him.
The police officer is said to have attempted to hold on to Spencer, which resulted in both men tustling with each other and drawing their weapons.
An employee of the Postal Corporation is reported to have parted the fight and taken away Spencer’s weapon.
The matter was reported and Spencer was subsequently arrested. He is currently on station bail.(KW)
