Carnival day launch a hit with children

Some of the future stars of carnival were on show last weekend, as the Scotiabank sponsored day launch of Vincy Mas was held at Heritage Square in Kingstown.{{more}}

A number of young calypsonians and soca artistes, slated to appear in the Junior Calypso and Soca monarch finals on July 1, gave the spectators a taste of what to expect at the finals.

Those appearing included Malik “Baby Mal” Castello, Delanzo “Lanzo” Lavia and Nariss “Miss G” Gerald, Ariekke Delpesche, Giovanne “Super D” Collins, and reigning primary school champion Kristiana “Singing Kristi” Christopher.

Junior Panorama champions the C.W. Prescod Primary School steel pan orchestra were also in attendance, and showed why they are one of the leading young pan sides in the country, with renditions of local, regional and international songs.

Mas was also represented at the launch, in the form of “ole mas” from members of the Urban Expressions theatre, depicting carnival characters of Vincy Mas past.

The Grenadine island of Bequia was also represented by students of the Bequia Anglican Primary School, whose focus on climate change was the theme for their J’Ouvert presentation.

Members of the Lowmans Leeward Primary School dance group also graced the stage, doing a dance routine entitled Tribute to Paramount Chief Joseph Chatoyer.

Also taking place on the square were a number of traditional games for the young and old, which included hopscotch, morale and jump rope, with face painting and a bouncing castle which featured as added entertainment for the children.

The Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) introduced the day launch as a precursor to the night festivities, which took place later that day at the Solidarity Inc Car Park on Bay Street.
