The competition was held as part of the 2014 Carnival launch at the Solidarity Inc Car Park in Kingstown, last Saturday night.
Veteran calypsonian Vivian Miller, who goes by the stage name âI Come,â was judged to have the best new calypso for his rendition of entitled âBody Parts,â in which he sang about the amputations of limbs associated with diabetes.
Placing second in that category was Noel âDefoeâ Costello, with his song âThanks,â while former new song and calypso monarch Glenroy âSulleâ Caesar placed third with his song âFacts of Life.â
Also performing in the calypso category were Alpheus âObserverâ Duncan, âIf Calypso is Dyingâ, as well as Alexis âLexiâ Joseph, who has been off the calypso scene, due to illness that led to his left leg being amputated, with his song âSunday Evening Bassa Bassa.â
In the Ragga Soca category, Tamisha Nicholls, no stranger to the stage in performance and pageantry, took the crown when the judges decided that her piece âWhat you drinkingâ was the best new song in that group.
Nicholls was followed by Travis Lynch, the âWhiz Kid,â who came in second with his song âFettologist,â while Kahalia âQueen Bâ Beache placed third with âMello Hype.â
Also performing in the Ragga Soca category were Cleopatra âSexy Cleopatraâ Hendrickson, âPassionâ and Vincy Marshall, âFaith.â
Orlando Foster, who goes by the stage name âSyxxâ and is also no stranger to the stage, tasted victory in the best new soca category with his song âCrazy.â
He was followed by Sexy Cleopatra, who sang âNah go Home,â while Tamisha Nicholls placed third with âCome to the Stage.â
Also competing in the soca category were Queen B, âWuk up Time,â and Godwin âGaoâ Oliver with his crowd pleaser âHornerman.â
The new song competition was introduced to encourage artistes to write and produce material early, and has been a staple of the Carnival launch for the past six years. (JJ)
