Guides’ photo exhibition

Vincentians, who had the chance to visit the Girl Guides Headquarters last weekend, were treated to a visual display of guiding history in St Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}}

The official opening ceremony of the Centenary Photo Exhibition was held last Friday at the headquarters.

While speaking at the opening, chief commissioner, Rechanne Browne-Matthias noted that the SVG Girl Guides Association has been involved in moulding young girls for the past 100 years.

“We have much to celebrate, we are very much alive and we intend as an association to continue to grow and thrive,” she said. “I urge you not only to look at the photograph but to search deeper into what is being captured.”

The photos on display captured memories that ranged from Lady Olave Baden-Powell’s first visit to St Vincent and the Grenadines, to the current companies that are a part of the movement and the many activities that they are a part of.

The chief commissioner also took the time to specially thank Krystal Robertson, the guider that spearheaded the centenary photo exhibition committee.

In her remarks, Robertson stressed that it was important for the committee to make the photo exhibition a memorable experience.

“We wanted to give something to the association that can be kept and preserved for the next 100 years,” she explained.

Robertson added that with this idea in mind, the committee was able to get local artists to donate photos to the Association as congratulations for their milestone.

These artists included Brittany Sassine, a Ranger in Number 23 Ranger Unit, whose painting depicted girls around a campfire; Kenville Huggins, teacher at Student Support Services, who did a collage of different activities that Girl Guides took part in; local artist, Dinks Johnson , whose painting was an outline of St Vincent with the guiding trefoil in the centre; and Maxon Rock, Art teacher at the JP Eustace Memorial Secondary School , whose painting was of a girl guide doing the three finger salute.

In addition to these artists, the photo exhibition committee thanked the persons that attended the opening ceremony, including Frederick Stephenson, the Minister of National Mobilisation and all the media officials from the various media houses.

The committee expressed thanks to the many persons and institutions that made the event possible. They include Beachcombers Hotel, Restaurant and Bar, Caribbean Medical Imaging Centre, C.K. Greaves and Company Ltd, Dr Camille Nicholls, Calvert Jones Robertson’s Surveying Services, Dr Lenoir Anderson, Dawn Dennie Joche, Rhesia John, Hotel Alexandrina,Yvonne Mayers, Sonia Lewis, Murray Heights Hotel, Multigraphics, Maferne Mayers- Oliver, Phillips Bakery, Photomax, Clera Providence, Rogers Photo Studio,Sweet N’s, and Amber Glasgow.
