Vincentians to pay less for brown sugar

Vincentians should be paying less for brown sugar, following a scheduled price reduction that should have taken effect yesterday.{{more}}

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves announced the price cut while wrapping up debate on the 2014 Supplementary Estimates in the House of Assembly last Thursday night.

The announced price changes are as follows:

Area One (Kingstown and suburbs) from $1.40 to $1.28 per pound

Area Two from $1.43 to $1.32

Area Three from $1.47 to $1.37, and

Grenadines a cut to $1.45 per pound.

Brown sugar is imported by the Agricultural Input Warehouse, which uses its mark-up to help subsidise the cost of farm inputs.

Dr Gonsalves said the company will still continue to subsidise the cost of NPK fertiiliser and blue diathene, and it is able to do so while cutting sugar prices, because of a new arrangement with suppliers International Trade Link of Trinidad and Tobago.
