Haynes captures number one spot

Inspector Bernard Haynes had no doubt that his daughter would have placed in the annual Grade 5 Public Speaking Competition.{{more}}

Barrouallie Government School student Bernique Haynes was awarded the top position in the primary level competition, which was a collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the National Insurance Services (NIS), under their literacy enrichment programme.

Capturing the essence of the topic: “Religious Education should be an important part of the school’s curriculum, if we wish to reduce the incidence of crime and acts of violence in our land,” Bernique was also adjudged to have the “Best Prepared Speech.”

The Grade 5 student could not contain her excitement as she was announced the winner of the competition and she immediately jumped out of her seat to collect her trophy.

When SEARCHLIGHT spoke with her father, he proudly stated that “she always has the hunger and thirst to succeed.

“She had the attitude and the ability so I’m very much pleased and happy to see my daughter win the competition,” said Haynes, who is the current band master of the police band.

According to Haynes, Bernique is the current winner of her school’s public speaking competition and she also participated in the Brownie Public Speaking Competition.

The dedicated father also revealed that he and his wife, Joy Davis-Haynes, would often practise with their daughter and give her tips on how to improve her presentation.

Furthermore, Haynes praised Friday’s proceedings for being a good competition and he also wished all the other competitors well.

“I wish all of them well, so they can continue to be public speakers in their school and even as they advance in life to secondary level and at the tertiary level,” the inspector said.

The second place was awarded to Zaida David of the Marriaqua Government School, who also walked away with the “Best Impromptu Speech” title. In the impromptu category, David enlightened the audience on “My idea of total pleasure” and urged everyone to have one as well.

C.W. Prescod student Javin George walked away with the third position.

Other competitors included Kaela Francois – Spring Village Methodist School, Makedda Miguel – Clare Valley Government School, Jonoliah John – Lowmans Leeward Anglican School, Lisa Williams – Diamond Government School, Jahphine Cupid – Fairhall Government School, Reanna Phillips– Argyle Government School and Harsha Rajani – Windsor Primary School.
