Around the world, diaspora affairs has reached a high level of theory, action, and operation or functioning, a release from the meeting organisers said.

As a result, a rich body of knowledge and experience of diaspora affairs has been accumulating over the last several years, it said.

This information is very empowering; it helps to build the capacity of diaspora communities, diaspora organizations, and persons, including diaspora leaders, in order for them to serve as a more powerful and positive force. In addition, international organizations and governments have also been using this knowledge to build their capacity to manage migration in relation to the development of countries, the release said.

In order to bring this empowering knowledge to Vincentians, the St Vincent and the Grenadines Diaspora Committee of New York Inc has created a Diaspora Leadership Development Programme. This specific workshop is a vital part of that programme.

The objectives of the workshop are as follows:

o To provide an opportunity for Vincentians in the diaspora to build their capacity for providing high quality leadership to the Vincentian diaspora in the 21st century;

o To learn about the latest global approaches or methods of diaspora affairs;

o To build the leadership and human resources base of the Vincentian diaspora in relation to acquiring knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to take the Vincentian diaspora to a higher level of existence in terms of action and benefits;

o To learn about concepts and ideas vital for conducting effective diaspora affairs.
