UWI to lend a hand

The University of the West Indies (UWI) will be a part of the solution to the natural disaster that took place on Christmas Eve, 2013.{{more}}

So says the registrar of the St Augustine campus Clement William Iton, while speaking at the UWI Open Campus graduation ceremony, last Friday.

Iton, who grew up in New Montrose, expressed commiseration on behalf of the UWI and noted that the world is going through some “crazy things,” as it relates to climate change.

“The university as an entity, through the Vice- Chancellor has also mobilized and we have launched a relief fund,” Iton revealed.

He observed that the university is perhaps a repository with the greatest concentration of man- power in the Caribbean.

“We are going to make available the expertise that we have in terms of the civil engineers, the persons from Ministries of Sustainable Development and any other expertise that can impact the rebuilding effort in these islands,” Iton said.

In addition, Iton stated that the Vice-Chancellor will be in touch with Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves to put this initiative in place.

He also noted that the Open Campus reponded almost immediately to the disaster and that they continue to keep their relief fund open.
