Relatives and friends braved the elements on Christmas Day, in order to deliver food to men incarcerated at the Belle Isle Correctional facility.{{more}}

Their efforts were hindered however, by a road block caused by landslide, which left the communities between Belle Isle and Richmond cut off from the rest of the island for almost 12 hours.

SEARCHLIGHT met persons who were on their way to and from the prisons, waiting for the road to be cleared.

Some persons indicated that they had been trying to get further north to North Leeward as early as 8:00 pm the night before, but had to seek refuge in the homes of friends in Barrouallie and Keartons, or sleep in vehicles.

In keeping with a Christmas tradition, relatives and friends of inmates were on their way to delivering home cooked meals and drinks, but were stranded for hours until the road was cleared.

Some had travelled from as far as the country’s windward end.

The journey was further delayed after the debris was removed, since the remaining wet dirt made it close to impossible for vehicular traffic to proceed, because of the slope in the road.

Commuters had to wait a little longer for the area to be hosed off by the Fire Brigade of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.(JJ)
