Businesses urged not to place garbage near bins around Kingstown

Businesses have been advised that their garbage will not be taken up by the Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) of the Central Water and Sewage Authority (CWSA){{more}}, if it is placed next to the garbage and recycle bins that were recently placed at strategic points throughout Kingstown.

Chief executive officer of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority (SVGTA) Glen Beache made this clear, while speaking at a press conference on Monday.

Beache, who noted that the SVGTA was a sponsor of the garbage and recycle bins initiative, said that the bins were placed there for the use of pedestrians.

“Since this is tourism month, I’ve noticed – wll we were a sponsor of it, all the bins that were put down around Kingstown,” he said.

“I’m encouraging all pedestrians to make use of these bins and stop the littering so that we can have a very clean Kingstown.”

“That being said, I don’t mean for businesses to take their garbage and put them next to the bins, because they will not be picked up by CWSA”.

The CEO pointed out that one of the complaints from the public has always been that there were not enough garbage bins in the city. He said he hopes that persons will make use of the bins now, as they are everywhere in Kingstown.

“Somebody was actually telling me that they think it’s too many. I said no. Leave it that way. Nobody can complain that they have nowhere to put their garbage. So, I encourage Vincentians and challenge Vincentians to please make use of them,” Beache said.

The Kingstown Litter Reduction Initiative, which includes the placement of litter and recycle bins in strategic locations in Kingstown, was launched in late October.

The plastic bins, found in pairs in the national colours of St Vincent and the Grenadines, have been placed initially in 17 locations around Kingstown. The project is an initiaive of the SWMU and Air Inc.(BK)
