Lightning from thunderstorm destroys VINLEC transformers
The thunderstorm which passed over mainland St Vincent Wednesday morning knocked out three VINLEC transformers, including one just outside the offices of SEARCHLIGHT.{{more}}
Just after 11 a.m. Wednesday, a lightening strike, which was followed by a deafening clap of thunder, disabled a three-phase transformer at Lower Kingstown Park, just yards away from SEARCHLIGHT. The jolt of electricity from the lightning totally dislodged one of the transformerâs contacts, resulting in power loss to consumers in the area for several hours.
Within minutes of being informed, St Vincent Electricity Services Ltd (VINLEC) had a team on site, and the process to replace the damaged transformer with three new single-phase transformers began. The repair work eventually took approximately six hours.
Tamara Sprott, VINLECâs communications officer, told SEARCHLIGHT yesterday that transformers in Glen and Montrose were also damaged during Wednesdayâs thunderstorm, but by the time we spoke with her, all systems were back up and running.
Several homeowners and businesses, including SEARCHLIGHT, reported damage to electronic and electrical equipment from Wednesdayâs lightning strike.
