Browne’s eyes set on one day becoming elected member of Parliament

Senator Luke Browne’s first bid to become an elected member in the Parliament did not materialise, but the young man says that he is grateful to be given the opportunity to serve the people.{{more}}

“I accept this tremendous and awesome responsibility with humility and tremendous respect for the Government, which has a track record as distinguished as the Unity Labour Party (ULP),” Browne said in Parliament, last week during his maiden speech.

He said that he is looking forward to contributing to policies and laws and participating in decision making at the highest level.

Browne was appointed senator, as well as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Tourism and Culture.

“Today I stand as senator and parliamentary secretary of Tourism, Sports and Culture and as much as I have heard the to and fro of the prospects, whether I’d be in the next general elections contest, I would like to declare that I would like one day, and one day not too far from now, to return to this honourable House as an elected member,” Browne said.

“I plan to function in and out of this House in a manner that completely justifies the faith that has been given in me.”

“There was a time when I scored runs to help my team, or scored goals, but now I am scoring runs, goals or points for a champion government and for the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines,” Browne continued.

Regarding his appointment in the Ministry of Sports, Tourism and Culture, he said that he comes forward with ideas and looks forward to working together with the minister.

“So that we could put sports on a platform so that people can make a better living for themselves,” Browne said.

He further explained that he looked forward to serving in the House.

“I know there will be times when I will have to stand and speak and times when I should sit and listen – there are times when I have to be on the offensive and there are times when I will have to defend.”

But whatever it takes, Browne said that he hoped that he would be able to make a contribution to the House, which generations of Vincentians will remember for a long time.

In 2010, Browne contested the East Kingstown seat on a ULP ticket. He was defeated by Leader of the Opposition Arnhim Eustace.(DD)
