Doyle refutes candidacy claims

The five-time monarch, speaking to SEARCHLIGHT in a telephone interview, has refuted claims that he intends to take the political stage as a candidate.

Fabulous, real name Gamal Doyle, confirmed that allegations that he will be a candidate for the Unity Labour Party are just rumours, and that there was never any formal conversation about him entering active politics.

“I am for the people, but I have not gone that far into that kind of thing,” he said.

Up to Wednesday this week, it was being rumoured among some members of the public that Doyle had been tipped to be the next ULP candidate for the Central Kingstown constituency

“I heard it too and I don’t know where it came from,” Doyle said.

“I guess it’s a reflection of what some people want to actually happen,” he continued.

But so far, according to the soca giant, he has not made any official decision of that sort.

“My main calling, I think, is to be a musician – I am a performer by heart, not a politician,” he explained.

Doyle has appeared on the ULP campaign trail in the past, and has penned songs for the party’s 2005 and 2010 election bids.

For now, the only support ‘The General’ is amassing, is for his musical campaign.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the ULP Julian Francis told SEARCHLIGHT that he did not know anything about the soca artiste being a potential ULP candidate. (DD)
