Speaking at the Opening Ceremony for the program, Parliamentary Representative for West St George Hon. Cecil McKie said that the summer program was one of the programs recognized by the area council team, as they looked for programs in which children can become involved. He noted that the program, which seeks to develop children to become totally rounded individuals, has made significant strides over the years.
McKie pointed out that they have seen improvements in results at the primary school level, the Common Entrance and CXC and CSEC examinations. He noted that they will continue to work along with the children, as well as track their progress, as they seek to establish more role models from the area. He noted that the summer program is filled with innovation and promises to be a very exciting one.
Meanwhile, the program’s facilitator Hyacinth Harry said she was pleased to see so many children in attendance. She said that the âchildren’s turnoutâ is an indication that they are aiming for the stars and becoming meaningful adults. Harry implored the children to become stars and good citizens. She also encouraged the children to conduct themselves mannerly and respectfully throughout the program.
Over the next two weeks the children will be engaged in Art and Craft, Dance Music, Literacy and Numeracy and lessons on Virtue. A field trip and a Sports Day is also planned for the participants.
The West St George Summer Program is in its 11th year and is this year being held under the theme âReaching for the Stars”.
