Following his vacation, Ambassador Gonsalves’ tour of duty will come to an end after five and a half years.
Gonsalves, son of Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, took the office in September 2007, replacing Margaret Ferrari at the post.
During his tenure, Gonsalves spoke on issues affecting Vincentians at home and in the diaspora, including discussions on global warming and climate change.
At the time of his appointment, this country’s Opposition, led by Arnhim Eustace, said that Gonsalves selection was a clear case of nepotism, but this assertion was dismissed by then Minister of Foreign Affairs Sir Louis Straker.
In March last year, Gonsalves was detained by a member of the New York Police Department, after he walked through a barricade in front of his office at the United Nations building.
The ambassador was released after having been handcuffed for about 20 minutes.
