Fish exported to US today

Fishermen in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) may soon have an additional market for the sale of their fish, if all goes well with a trial shipment slated to leave for the USA today.{{more}}

Minister of Agriculture Saboto Caesar, has indicated that discussions, leading to the possible establishment of weekly exports of fish from SVG, have been taking place with an importer in New York.

The Minister stated that today, a trial shipment of about 1,000 lbs of fish (Snapper, King fish etc) will leave for New York, which can set the stage for a weekly shipment of some 50,000 lbs of fish to that country.

According to the Minister, this is all part of the efforts to establish both traditional and non-traditional markets for fish out of this country. He noted that in addition to the on-going work being undertaken to secure the European Union Certificate for the export of fish to the EU, talks are being held with other countries, such as Venezuela.

“Later this month (June), an investor in the fisheries sector in Denmark is expected to arrive in St Vincent and the Grenadines to conduct a feasibility study for the exportation of fish to Denmark.

“We are going to continue to search for new markets in North America for our local fish and whilst it is important to secure markets abroad, the Ministry is all ready to work with fishermen to ensure we can receive a constant supply of quality fish for export”.
