Fernandes retired as chief executive officer (CEO) of the Barbados-based Starcom Network Inc, operators of HOTT FM, Love FM and Voice of Barbados and, according to Paul Mc Leish, general manager of SVGBC, he has been contracted to head up HITZ FM here.

Mc Leish confirmed that Fernandes has already started working for the company, but he will not be residing in St Vincent.

According to the GM, communication will be maintained via telephone or the Internet and he will be making visits here from time to time.

“He is working with us in trying to deal with a number of issues that we are trying to address,” SVGBC’s GM said.

Mc Leish explained Fernandes’ tasks will include issues relating to music and staffing.

He further stated that Fernandes also has a lot of television experience and this will be used in a number of other services of the company.

“He (Fernandes) is no longer with Star Network and we have known him for a long time through the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) [of] which we are a member – we sought the opportunity to use him with his experience and that is basically it,” Mc Leish said.

Fernandes has over 35 years of media work under his belt and was the longest serving president of the CBU. He was inducted into that organisation’s Hall of Fame back in 2004.

He also brings with him a wealth of experience, having served on the boards of The Nation Corporation of Barbados, Grenada Broadcasting Network of Grenada and the Caribbean Communications Company Ltd of Trinidad and Tobago.
