Police officer shot by robber in city
A shoot out between a police officer and a male suspect, during a robbery in Kingstown around 11 am, yesterday, resulted in the police officer being shot three times and the robber escaping with approximately $100,000.{{more}}
According to reports, Police Constable 843 Julanie Jack who is assigned to beat and patrol, was on duty in the vicinity of the Postal Corporation on Halifax Street, when the incident occurred.
An eye witness told SEARCHLIGHT that a male, dressed in brown long sleeved shirt and a black cap, snatched a deposit bag from a female office attendant of the Postal Corporation, who was returning from the bank.
The eye witness said Jack attempted to apprehend the robber, but pulled back, after the suspect drew a gun.
âThe officer in return, drew his weapon and began firing at the man, who was running, but as he ran, he returned fireâ¦,â the eyewitness said.
âThe man was running and shooting over his shoulder and thatâs when the officer got shot,â the eye witness said.
Unofficial reports say that the suspect escaped with the deposit bag, said to contain approximately $100,000, in a silver Toyota Sprinter, number plate PU 519.
Up to press time yesterday, Constable Jack was warded at the Accident and Emergency Department of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, while the office attendant, who was said to be âbadly shaken upâ, was receiving counselling at the Postal Corporation.
Police are investigating the matter. (AA)
