Bishop’s College Kingstown Young Leaders complete final projects for competition

The Bishop’s College Kingstown Young Leaders recently completed their final projects for this year’s competition.{{more}}

Twenty-six Grade Five students from the Kingstown Anglican School were invited to the Bishop’s College on Friday, April 26 to participate in a project held under the theme “No child should be left behind in Agriculture”.

President of the BCK Young Leaders Ashale Latchman explained to SEARCHLIGHT that because they are the only school in the Kingstown Zone to have an agricultural science programme, they saw it fit to share it with the younger generation.

“We did theory and practical,” Latchman said. “We spoke to them about agriculture, the importance and why they should eat their vegetables”.

The primary school students were able to experience practical agriculture first hand, as the Young Leaders took them to the Agricultural Science field and taught them how to plant cabbages and other plants.

Plants were also given to the students to take home, after their morning in the field.

“Something for them to look after,” said Ollider Walsh, secretary of the BCK Young Leaders.

Latchman said the Young Leaders are also participating in a mentorship programme with the Grade Six students of the Kingstown Anglican School as another project for this year’s Young Leaders programme.

“Even after our project is over…we’re going to help them with their school work and whatever problems they may be having in school,” she said.

The BCK Young Leaders say that since the start of the programme, they feel that they have made huge progress.

“The programme is going extremely well. Even though we had a little hiccup and so on, we overcame those and moved forward,” the president declared.

Walsh stated that she feels as if they have a fair chance of winning the competition this year.

The BCK Young Leaders embarked on several projects since the start of the competition, the major one being to create a youth friendly space in their school where students can meet with counsellors to get the motivation that they need to keep focused on their school work.

“We believe that the change we wish to see…must begin with us. It will happen and it can happen,” Walsh said.

Final documentation of all Young Leaders’ projects was submitted last week Tuesday. (BK)
